School blood drives would help reduce national shortage

The American Red Cross recently announced a decline in blood donations as well as a national shortage of donated blood, and it is encouraging communities to start holding high school-based donation drives once again. The organization said the shortage is partly due to climate-related disasters, a scaling back of blood drive events and a busy travel season. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, about a quarter of the organization’s donated blood came from school drives.
