School design components such as ample outdoor space, natural lighting and tranquil spaces should be a priority in addition to mental health personnel and formal programs, writes Oni Boulware, who served in the Nevada Youth Legislature. “By paying greater attention to the design of the buildings in which students spend their long days, schools could have a tremendous positive influence on mental health,” writes Boulware.
