District closing racial gap in math with “tools to succeed”

A long-term effort to close the racial gap in advanced math at Union Public Schools in Tulsa, Okla., now offers after-school help, math tutors starting in third grade, do-overs on a fifth-grade advanced-level math entrance exam and teacher referrals that can trump the exam scores. The district, which has struggled to hire qualified math teachers, now tries to recruit alumni, and some teachers are seeking different approaches to math, such as construction and aviation programs, to encourage more students into advanced classes, where they’re frequently reminded they can succeed.
