UK start time, how to watch and full list of nominees – MyCyberBase

The 96th Oscars ceremony is due to take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on Sunday.

Hosted by US comedian and talk show presenter Jimmy Kimmel – who helms the awards ceremony for the fourth time after hosting in 2017, 2018 and 2023 – the year’s biggest night in entertainment will see the world’s top blockbusters go head-to-head for a range of Academy Awards.

Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer leads the way with 13 award nominations, including best picture, best actor (Cillian Murphy) and best supporting actress (Emily Blunt).

The three-hour long biopic about the father of the atomic bomb could make history if it beats the record of 11 wins currently held jointly by Ben Hur, Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

In a continuation of a journey that has been peculiarly intertwined, it is joined by Greta Gerwig‘s Barbie, last year’s biggest box office hit, which is up for eight awards.

What time do the Oscars start?

The 2024 Oscars ceremony is due to start about 11pm UK time on Sunday 10 March.

ITV1 and ITX coverage for UK viewers will begin at 10:15pm, with film buff Jonathan Ross hosting a studio panel of celebrity guests to preview the ceremony and later offer up reaction to the winners.

Meanwhile, Good Morning Britain presenter Ross King is set to host live coverage of the Oscars red carpet on ITVX from 9pm.

Over in Hollywood, award presenters are due to include Zendaya, Al Pacino, Lupita Nyong’o, Bad Bunny, Dwayne Johnson, Regina King, Matthew McConaughey, Mahershala Ali, Ke Huy Quan, Brendan Fraser and Michelle Pfeiffer.

How can I watch from the UK?

ITV will be the UK home of this year’s Oscars coverage, taking over the mantle to stream the awards show from Hollywood after Sky, the previous long-time host on British television, chose to forego a new deal.

Coverage starts on ITV1 and ITVX at 10:15pm UK time on Sunday, preceded by a livestream from the Oscars red carpet from 9pm on ITVX.

Viewers in Scotland can follow along on STV or STVX, while the Oscars will be broadcast on ABC and various other streaming services in the US.

Who are the nominees?

Oppenheimer leads a list of nominations that will be familiar to anyone who watched the Baftas last month, where it took home seven gongs including best film, director, leading actor and supporting actor.

The film is considered the frontrunner for best picture and could also win British director Nolan and Irish Actor Murphy their first Oscars in the directing and best actor categories, respectively.

Peaky Blinders star Murphy has faced strong competition from The Holdovers star Paul Giamatti but has pulled ahead in the race in recent weeks with wins at the Baftas and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.

Nolan is also in the running for the adapted screenplay trophy for his work adapting the 2005 Oppenheimer biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J Sherwin, and the film is nominated for a raft of technical awards.

The award for best supporting actor looks like it’s Robert Downey Jr’s to lose, with the American actor on course for his first Oscar after winning all other major awards this season for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss, the head of the Atomic Energy Commission.

The Iron Man star’s competition in that category includes Robert De Niro for Killers of the Flower Moon, Ryan Gosling for Barbie, and Mark Ruffalo for Poor Things, which is teed up for 11 different awards.

Barbie star Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig were snubbed in the best actress and director categories, respectively, but the film itself is still up for best picture and a range of other awards, including America Ferrera as best supporting actress and two entries for best original song.

But Ferrera, as well as Downey Jr’s Oppenheimer co-star Blunt, may have her work cut out to secure best supporting actress, with Da’Vine Joy Randolph dominating at this year’s other awards shows for her performance as a grieving cook alongside Giamatti’s grumpy boarding school teacher in comedy drama The Holdovers.

The best actress category is thought to be a two-horse race between Emma Stone for Poor Things and Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon, with Stone – a previous Oscar recipient in this category for La La Land – having won the Bafta and Gladstone emerging victorious at the SAG awards.

Gladstone, if she picks up the Oscar for her role in Martin Scorsese‘s western about the murders of wealthy members of the Osage tribe in the 1920s, would be the first Native American to win in the category.

There was no room for her co-star Leonardo Di Caprio in the best actor category, though.

The Zone of Interest, English filmmaker Jonathan Glazer’s harrowing portrait of a family living next to Auschwitz, is likely to win the best international film prize for Great Britain. It is also nominated for best picture and best director.

Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K Brown have made Oscars history before the ceremony even begins by becoming the first duo of Black actors to receive nominations in the lead (Wright) and supporting (Brown) acting categories for the same movie.

The pair starred in Cord Jefferson’s comedic satire American Fiction, which is also up for best motion picture, best adapted screenplay, and best score.

And it’s also the first time two gay actors have been nominated for playing two gay characters in the same year, with Colman Domingo up for best actor for playing civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in Rustin and Jodie Foster nominated for best supporting actress in the role of swimming coach Bonnie Stoll in Nyad.
