On an extremely windy afternoon at Sixfields, Northampton Town took on Leicester City in their first pre-season fixture. Despite the unseasonable conditions there was a big crowd in attendance with Northampton Town’s Women also in action later in the day.

Summer signing Patrick Brough was included in the Cobblers starting line-up along with Kieron Bowie who was back at the club for a second season on loan from Fulham. Recent addition Manny Monthe was not included while there were a number of trialists named on the bench.

Jamie Vardy, Conor Coady and Harry Winks all started for Leicester with the Foxes new boss Enzo Maresca naming a strong side.

With a number of players still sidelined through injury and Jon Brady opting for a slimmed down schedule of fixtures in pre-season, the Foxes visit came three weeks ahead of the Cobblers first game back in League 1.

The Cobblers, donned in their new PUMA away kit, showed some good pressing early on while some alert defending from Sam Sherring and Patrick Brough denied the Foxes a clear sight on goal.

Kieran Dewsbury-Hall headed Leicester in front on 27 minutes before the Cobblers were forced into a change with Shaun McWilliams, who had picked up an early knock, coming off.

Max Dyche and Kieron Bowie both had half chances to draw the Cobblers level but Leicester went close to a second just before half-time, Jamie Vardy shooting into the side netting.

Mitch Pinnock and Harvey Lintott made way for the second half with the pair replaced by a couple more trialists.

Vardy had a shot saved by Burge with the Cobblers keeper denying Dennis Praet on the follow-up. Both sides then made a host of changes as the game reached the hour mark.

Wilfred Ndidi shot wide and substitute James Dadge made a good save to prevent James Justin doubling the Foxes lead, the game having become a little stretched following those changes.

The Cobblers went close to an equaliser when Daniel Iversen was forced to turn behind a free-kick from trialist B but the game ended in a narrow victory for the Championship side.
