Add Dreamy Colors of Autumn in 5 Steps | Photoshop Tutorial

Hi there this is animation today I’m gonna share with you five steps to get this beautiful dreamy warm autumn looking photo shop so without any further ado let’s get started so here we are first up in this photo was sponsored by story blocks dot-com and I talked to

Them and they were very kind enough to offer us this head over to storage box comm /youtube and you will get a 7-day complete full access to the massive 400,000 image blabbering 400,000 images and you can download unlimited for seven days and if you want even more I don’t

Think you will but if you want even more you will get 60% off on Marketplace content not to mention the free vectors and icons and other graphic design stuff if you’re into that and once you sign up searching for the perfect image is a breeze just head over to the website

Story blocks comm click on images for this example people are looking for an image of a young woman right in a nature background so we would simply type young woman and hit enter now obviously it shows us images of young woman but we want her to be in a natural background

So here’s what we would do go to the categories and then select nature and wildlife now we have images of women in natural background it also advises me on additional filters whether you want to make her an eye contact whether you want it to be barefoot or not you’re just

Gonna scroll over and probably like these type of images and similar images are stacked together so if you like this image and if you want to search for similar images so scroll over similar images are together so I like this kind of photo from the same shoot I like this

One so we would just simply click on the download button and choose the quality we want and you can do all of this for free you can download as much as you want for seven days so the first step to achieve the warm fall look or any other look for

That matter is to make minimal adjustments where we take care of the color tone exposure and all that minimal stuff okay so create a curves adjustment layer click on the adjustment layer icon and choose curves now inside of curves only have to do first let’s take care of the luminosity

You are the brightness and stuff so let me just show that to you and I think the skin is a little bit too bright so what we need to do this zoom and have a look all you need to do just click on this hand icon and once you hover over the

Image it will show you where does that particular area exactly fall in this curve so I’ll just pick an area here and click and drag it down okay click and drag it down make sure this is activated and I’ll do just a little bit I think it

Was too bright maybe just a little bit and that’s fine you can also go ahead and name it exposure or brightness let’s name it probably brightness or let’s name it exposure that’s a proper name for it exposure there you go and that’s fine next let’s take care of the color

In the tone so create another curves adjustment layer because you might have to come back to this later after you apply the filters and all that stuff we might have to come back to this okay create another curves adjustment layer and just click on this button the middle one not the black one

Not the white one the middle one very set the gray point okay click on this one and click on an area which should have been great in real life so in this image as you can see this area should have been great so I’ll just try clicking on it and try clicking on

Different areas whichever area looks good for you just click on that area and you can make multiple trials so if I click on that area boom you get that effect also you can try clicking on these areas these areas and see which one works for you so for this image I

Think this area works fine and you can name that color or tone let’s name it don’t fine now let’s take care of the minimal adjustments that we want in this image so I want more of a yellow tone to it so I’ll add one more curves adjustments left and probably I’ll go to

Blues right because blue is the opposite of yellow I want more yellow in the highlights so what do I do I’ll just decrease the Blues in the highlights so just like this that looks probably good and once I increase the yellows or decrease the Blues both are

The same thing because blue is the opposite of yellow always remember RGB opposite of see my red is the opposite of zeon Green is the opposite of magenta and is the opposite of yep very simple now when I decrease the blues or increase the yellows I see there’s a lot of green

In it so we’ll go to green and reduce it just a tad bit just a tad bit like that not too much just a little bit probably a little more and there we go it’s done look how far we have come so before after really nice now let’s

Double click on the curves and let’s name it additional all right now let’s make a group of all of these three by holding the shift and clicking on the last curves adjustment layer hold the shift key and click on the first one okay very simple we select all three in a row

Press ctrl or command G and let’s name this group minimal or minimal adjustments for our suits you best now the second step is targeting specific colors or specific areas and modify the colors in that areas so click on the adjustment layer icon and this time create hue saturation now once you enter

Hue/saturation click on this button again so click on that button and we want to target this color of the trees in the background so click on that color so that color is now targeted see yellows have been selected you want to make sure all of the yellows have been

Selected so how to do that click on this plus eyedropper tool and you can just start adding in colors as you add in colors look how this expands see it has expanded already if I just reset it let me show you focus here okay I’ll just

Click here once and if I click on this plus eyedropper to add to sample see how this expands make sure you click on all the green colors or what you can we can also draw with it so you can just click hold the click you can just draw and all

Of the colors will be added and target it now let’s take the hue slider to the left and watch the magic there we go now we want to add a little bit more saturation to this first let’s add a little bit lightness to it let’s make it

A little bright like that that looks good and now saturation in that particular area make sure the colors don’t blow out so don’t go overboard with it so 42 that’s pretty okay now we had the saturation we see something the skin is not looking right and her

Clothes her scarf that’s not let me right so we can mask out those areas so here we have the mask already adjustment let’s come with a mask remember take the brush make sure the foreground color is black again once the concept of masks black conceals white reveals wherever you paint black that

Area of the layer the adjustment lab won’t be shown or hidden wherever you paint white that area will be shown right now complete mask is white so the effect is all over the place so we can take the brush make sure the foreground color is black by pressing X to toggle

Between the foreground and the background and then just paint on the face there we go make sure the flow and opacity is 100% and we also don’t want this in this area like that we can paint over her sweater and if you want to see which areas are you painting you can

Press the backward slash key to have a look at the mask so so read other areas which are hidden and other areas are in their original Calais so there we go that’s a lose mask and press the backward slash key again and it will be back now have a look at it

Before and after so this is the before this is the after ads that fall look to it now if you want to increase the overall saturation you can do that as well click on the adjustment layer icon and choose hue/saturation and let’s increase the overall saturation let’s

Increase it this bit that looks great that looks nice but as you can see there are some areas which don’t look good so we’ll just mask it up very simple first of all we’ll copy this mask to this one because we don’t want oversaturated person so hold the alt or

Option click and drag this mask and place it in this area replace layer mask yes ok so we didn’t want saturation in this area fine so let’s increase saturation even more and see which areas are over saturating so as you can see there are some areas over here which are

Over saturating so we can just mask it out as so well so you can take the brush and make it bigger make sure mask is selected black and you can just mask these areas out which are over saturating like that and there we go we increase the overall saturation

Before/after makes a difference now let’s go ahead and zoom in a little bit and have a look at her stuff so ctrl a command + to zoom in and as you can see there’s not so much color in her scarf it’s it’s kind of discolored so we’ll

Add a Y Prince adjustment layer click on this adjustment layer icon again and choose vibrance and increase the color Wow now the scarf looks good but you wanna limit it just to this scarf so select the mask press ctrl or command I to invert the mask this paints the whole

Mask with black take the brush make sure the foreground color is white this time because we want to make the layer appear in this area and just paint in the scarf if you want to paint in the sweater you can but it’s not looking good in the

Sweater so we’ll just paint it away so if you paint it something extra with white so for example if we painted this area you can always go ahead and press x2 toggle between the foreground and the background and just paint away that particular area let’s paint this area

With white that looks fantastic now if you want to color the hair you can do that here as well but I don’t think we want it let’s create a separate layer for it we don’t want there let’s go back if we let’s have a look at the mask whether

It’s left somewhere no that looks perfectly fine probably this area a little bit that’s okay hold alt or option click on it again to view the image now let’s create one more vibrance adjustment layer and let’s add some color to her hair so we’ll just add a little bit color just

Like that and control a command-i and just paint on the hair like that that looks fine that looks nice okay so this is extra so I don’t know whether you can see it in this screen but it doesn’t make a difference now we need to make group of

All of these three these are targeted layers okay so select the last few saturation hold the shift select the first one it selects everything in the row press ctrl or command G and there’s no limitation to it you can target any area you want you can use even curves to

Add some additional colors and stuff this is just for targeted areas remember that okay press ctrl or command G and then you can name this group target it okay now this brings us to step number three which is dodging and burning now what is dodging and burning dodging and burning

Is brightening and darkening particular areas of the image to add dimension to it dodging is brightening burning is darkening so if you just want to dodge or just want to burn you can do that as well you don’t have to do both of them so I’ll

Just dodge let’s zoom out and create a level suggestion clip or curse any adjustment layer doesn’t really matter this is a simple way to dodge and burn and this is just for creating effects so click on the adjustment layer icon and choose any one levels make sure the

Neutral values don’t affect the image now change the blend mode of this one to screen now screen is a blend mode which brightens up stuff right so let’s choose screen and see it brightens up the whole photo we don’t want that to happen we just want to brighten certain areas so

What to do you gets to try and select the mask press ctrl or command I to invert the mask zoom in quite a bit take the brush make sure the foreground color is white press X then decrease the flow to somewhere around 5 percent hit Enter

Or return and just paint on some areas aren’t probably this area the brightness this area paint on the areas which are protruding in the direction of light ok any area which is facing the direction of light just paint on that area or any area which are already relatively brighter okay so

See how it adds dimension to the photo once we do it probably carve out her torso like that this particular area that looks cool doesn’t it and I think it’s more than enough have a look before after before after you can also go ahead and paint her hair if you’re into that

So a little bit of that and then just to make sure that you didn’t paint on the dark areas double click on the right hand side of the lid open up blending options and inside the blend if take the slider of the underlying layer from left

To right so if you take it it’s very harsh so what you can do hold it the alter option click on it break the sliders and then just to make a soft move like that probably like this and that looks fine hit OK and there we

Go before after adds an extra umph to the photo now you want to brighten the hair a little bit add more dimension to it so create one more adjustment layer and any adjustment layer will do curves levels anything doesn’t matter let’s choose levels again and screen again controller command I and you want

To treat hair separately take the brush and just paint on particular areas of the hair where you want the shine to be in so this particular area let’s increase the flow just dab on here we want to shine a little bit here yeah that’s pretty good

Now double click on the right hand side is there a little bit shine here as well that’s great now make sure the brush is soft and then take the slide off down the line left from left to right just like this and break it down by holding

The alt or option click on it and just break it down there you go hit okay then let’s have a look at the before and after so this is the before this is the after looks great doesn’t it now the hair is ready everything is ready let’s add some

Filters to it but before we do that make a group of both of these okay so hold the controller command or shift whatever you want make sure both of them are selected and then ctrl or command G and let’s name it dodging burn or dodge whatever you want

Dodge and burn if you burnt it you can also add a burn layer by let’s open it let’s do it let me show you how to do that as well so create a levels adjustment layer any adjustment layer and change the blend mode of this one to multiply because multiply is a blend

Mode which darkens stuff choose multiply and then control the commands I take the brush make sure foreground color is white flow 5% as usual and start painting on areas which are facing away from the direction of light so for example this area this area this area this area

Just like this and have a look at the before and after of this one before after I don’t like this area so let’s just paint it back again okay that’s pretty good now have a look before after if you wanted you can do that but I don’t want it maybe it’s if

It’s too much you can always go ahead and decrease the opacity of it so you can do that as well if you’re into that but we don’t want this in this photo just wanted to show you you can do that as well after we are done with dodging and

Burning now it’s time to get started with the fourth step and that’s the most fun step of all and that is adding filters now I can go crazy in this step you can add any amount of filters that you like any one which you like probably add some curves levels color look-up tables

It’s totally upon you so for me you can go ahead and add some color look-up tables some really nice ones there let’s choose that and let’s try some let’s try the teal orange plus contrast if you don’t like it maybe decrease the opacity maybe change the blend mode probably to

Color let’s see how that does increase the opacity and you can just try experiment with different filters here and there add curves levels photo filters whatever you want so for me I’m gonna choose curves and probably I want a little bit more magenta in the shadows so we’ll choose green because green is

Top is it off magenta so instead of taking green up in the shadows I’m gonna take it down because it’s the opposite so let’s take it this way not too much just a little bit see what kind of a difference it makes before after now a

Little bit blue in the shadows so let’s choose blue and increase it a bit just like this ad so really nice filter to it just two steps very simple to do I can name it whatever you want maybe filter green and blue green and blue and okay

And you can create a group of this controller command G it’s just one lever it doesn’t matter you can stack in more than one maybe girl look-up tables and then curves and then maybe one levels maybe one photo folder you can stack all of them but make sure to make a group

And keep them organized control a command G and let’s name it filters okay let’s collapse this group and the last step adding that weenie effect that light effect okay to do that it’s also very simple create a levels adjustment layer okay I’ve already taught you this take

This slider from right to left bottom slider just like this and we want this to just affect the corners so what to do make sure the mask is selected take the brush increase the hardness of the brush so hold the alter option the right mouse button drag it down to increase the

Hardness drag it to the right to make it a little bigger so let’s make it pretty big and let’s dab once just dab once on her face with black okay now it’s too low why is it too low because the flow is 5% let’s increase the flow 200 flow

And opacity has to be hundred and then let’s dab once with black there we go press ctrl or command D and then increase the size of it and adjust it in whatever way you like so probably I would have it this way ever have these areas dark so just like

This and you can always go ahead and modify this by the way so it’s okay that looks fine hit enter once you satisfied and then click on the mask this opens up the mask properties if you cannot see it go to windows and then make sure properties is checked now let’s increase

The feather see it becomes smooth probably let’s choose 400 there we go now that looks like something have a look before after but we don’t like it above right and we don’t like it on the subject but if you try to remove it hard from the subject if you take the brush

You try to remove it a little bit black since this is already feathery since we have added a lot of feather to it this doesn’t quite look right so how do we remove sharp things from this mask simple create another mask just hold alt or option click on it against to see the

Image and then create a group out of it ctrl or command G and inside of a group you can have one layer right and a group can also have a mask so this way we have double masks so create a mask right in there click on the mask button and now

You can remove sharp objects from it take the brush make the foreground color is black and you can just remove it see sharp things make it a little softer we didn’t wanted that sharp and you got to remove her and remove the top areas of the photo just

Like this now that looks like something all right now have a look at the before and after so this is the before this is the after gets our focus straight to the subject at this point if we think this area needs a little more brightness you

Can do that as well create an adjustment layer and let’s choose this time let’s choose exposure and probably let’s increase it a bit and as you can see it’s inside this group so it’s not visible in this area so let’s take it outside the group let’s see how that

Does here it’s too bright let’s just decrease the exposure increase it just a bit probably this much is fine 0.5 is fine now just apply in this area control a command I take the brush make sure the foreground color is white and just just paint on random areas like this this

Here adds much more punch to the photo here probably and have a look before after it does make a difference I can just add gamma correction and get this a little darker like that yeah have a look before after and once you do that do not

Forget to group the list so these layers took care of the lights okay so hold the shift click on this one press ctrl or command G and name this lights now let’s have a look we have every 5 steps 1 2 3 4 5 but if you want you can add an

Additional step and this step is very crucial that is the correction step if you find anything odd that thing is gotta be corrected in this step after adding all these filters we can see the skin is not just looking right skin is a lot reddish it’s the color is not good

It’s too much saturated so we can add one more curves adjustment layer and decrease the Reds okay so let’s choose Reds as you can see this area is getting a little red ish let’s activate this too we’ll just click and drag down now that looks natural now

What we can do we can probably increase the blues a little bit it’s a little bit yellowish just a tad bit and after you do that you can also decrease the saturation of this area create a hue/saturation adjustment layer and just decrease the saturation tad bit like that and he can group both

Of these less holding the controller command clicking on the other one controller command G and create a negative mask because we want this group just to be affecting the face so hold the alter option click on the mask button creates a negative mask take the brush make sure the foreground color is

White and just paint on the face just like this and that looks perfect have a look at the before and after before face is very saturated and not looking good after it looks perfect if you painted a little extra to the hair if just if it

Just moved out you already know what to do paint that area in black so press X again and just paint back in these areas there we are that’s pretty much done and you can just name this group probably Corrections at this point if you think and that’s the advantage of organizing

All these layers at this point if you think the hair is a little bit darker and you want to make the hair a little brighter you cannot just add a curves adjustment layer and you can make those adjustments you cannot do that right now you have to

Go to the roots so in order to go to the roots you want to target the brightness now you want to take care of the brightness now so we’ll go back to minimal and just above the exposure layer will create that leg okay because if you add above all the layers the

Brightness let what will happen is and this is crucial what will happen is all those filters targeted colors they will get activated and it will not look natural so let’s go back to the roots create a curves adjustment layer and then probably increase the brightness of

The hair just a tad bit like that and just mask in the hair control the command if I take the brush just paint on the hair with white look makes a difference doesn’t it so there we are it’s pretty ready zoom out and let’s have a look at

The before and after before after makes a difference you wanna add a little contrast you can do that as well and there we go our image is pretty ready and above all of this you can add some more filters if you like and let’s have

A look at it before and after so this is the before this is the after makes the difference right and this is the final image that we came up with so that’s how to get the autumn fall warm look in Photoshop whatever you want to call it

Call it but that’s how to achieve the autumn effect or any kind of effect in Photoshop and this is not the only way I should clarify that there are tons of ways of getting the same thing in Photoshop as you wanted to break things down for you so just as a recap what

Were the five steps number one making minimal adjustments get the brightness right get the contrast right get the color swipe color and tone everything right minimal adjustments where you get everything right then targeted adjustments for colors so you can target specific colors using the hue/saturation adjustment layer and just change the

Color of that for example we targeted the yellows we made it a little more magenta ish right and we saw that scarf as you can see the scarf was getting a little too saturated so what we did we mask that out then we went ahead and added an overall saturation and all that

Formed a part of targeted colors after that what was the step dodging and burning was dodging and burning brightening and darkening particular areas of the photo to add dimension to it and this time we added a new method we just added any adjustment layer that you want change the blend mode to

Multiply to darken it change the blend mode to screen to brighten it and mask those areas where you want to brighten or darken after dodging and burning our favorite step which is the fourth step is adding filters and you can go crazy in this applying any amount of filter that you’d like

After filters its lights you can just darken some areas probably brighten some areas and apply some lights effects and increase the exposure and do all that kind of stuff and the last step which is optional and that is correction if you think anything is wrong in this

Case the skin was wrong we added a curse adjustment clear decrease the Reds in the skin and took care of that and at the end if you want to make corrections if you see ok the hair is not too bright or other things the color is not too

Good here you can always go back to targeted or minimal what if you want and make those adjustments in those groups so therefore it’s very important to organize them in groups so that’s pretty much it let’s leave your I hope this video helped you and if it did make sure
